How do I find out what animals are up for adoption at Social Tees Animal Rescue?
Most of our animals are on our Petfinder page. Get news about new animals on our Facebook page. Or, better yet, come visit our shelter and meet the animals in person.
Why aren’t all of the animals listed on your website etc. in your shelter?
Most of the cats and a handful of the dogs that we rescue are on-site at Social Tees Animal Rescue. The rest of our animals (including most of our dogs) are in foster homes. (CLICK HERE to find out how you can become a Social Tees Animal Rescue foster parent!) If you want to meet any of the animals you see on our website or our Petfinder page, just give us a call at 212-614-9653 (please leave a message!) and we’ll hook you up.
Where do your animals come from?
Most of the dogs and cats that we have up for adoption come from New York City’s kill shelters. We take them directly off of the lists of animals to be euthanized each evening. We also rescue dogs from kill shelters in Tennessee, Texas, and California. When you adopt a pet through Social Tees Animal Rescue, it comes with full medical.
What does “full medical” mean?
“Full medical” means that the animal is neutered/spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, defleaed, dewormed, demited, and more. Dogs are tested for heartworm and cats are tested for feline leukemia and feline AIDS to make sure that our animals are free of these diseases and conditions. All together, each cat comes with about $600 worth of medical, and each dog comes with about $1200 worth of medical.
What’s the adoption process like?
Pretty straightforward. Here’s the step-by-step:
1. You fall in love with an amazing dog or cat.
2. You fill out an adoption application either at our shelter or online. (We’ll need to see at least one form of photo ID, and a home visit may be included in the application process.)
3. If your application is approved, you pay the adoption fee and sign an adoption contract.
4. You take your new best friend home! ,
I have a pet that I need to give up. What do I do?
That’s always the toughest question. We receive about 50 pet-surrender requests per day. Because we are a small facility with limited space that takes most of its animals from death row at nearby kill shelters, we can only take a small fraction of the pet-surrender requests that we get. That said, we encourage you to call or email us to find out if we have space. Please note, however, that we must charge a fee for all surrendered pets that we accept. (Though we’re a non-profit, we have high monthly bills that include rent, utilities, pet food and supplies, and more.)
I heard that you sometimes have reptiles up for adoption. Is that true?
Yes, but we only adopt out our reptiles to people who can pass a 5-minute, in-person oral exam. It’s pretty intense, so don’t get your hopes up! But if you’re interested in learning more about proper reptile care, stop by during our regular hours. Robert Shapiro will enthusiastically share his expert advice with you FOR FREE.
Do you need volunteers?
Yes! We rely heavily on (and are extremely grateful for!) volunteer help with tasks like cleaning the shelter, walking dogs, community outreach, weekend adoption events, and more. Please email email@example.com if you’d like to lend a hand.
Do you need/take donations?
Yes! We are constantly in need of eco-friendly cleaning supplies, pet food, dog leashes and collars, towels, and more. We also appreciate financial donations, which go directly to veterinary bills, pet food, and other necessities. (CLICK HERE to find out more about making a donation to Social Tees Animal Rescue.)
